The Commission for Provenance Research uses archives in Austria and other countries to identify confiscated objects in federal collections and to trace their history as fully as possible. The main Austrian sources are in the Austrian State Archive, the Vienna City and Provincial Archive, and the archives of the Austrian Federal Monuments Office and the federal museums.

The Commission investigates the federal collections; provincial and municipal authorities and other institutions conduct similar investigations of their collections. The Bureau of the Commission can forward inquiries about these collections and provide initial assistance.
